One of the stores around here started stocking Tofutti cheese slices. I am *so* disappointed in them! I tried making a grilled cheese sandwich and ended up throwing it out after one bite. Does anyone actually like this stuff? It's all oily and has this funky beany taste to it. Blech!

Why can't they carry the vegan gourmet cheese around here? :pout:

I LOVE Tofutti cheese slices! They are by far the best I have tried so far. I've never had the vegan gourmet cheese though.

I bought it recently and...eh...I dunno. I liked this other cheese I used to get much better, except it contains Casien. The Tofutti didn't seem to melt very well, and it was too strongly flavored for me.

i love this stuff

but only the nongarlic white ones

i find they somewhat melt if you cook the sandwhiches on a Very hot temperature

the only downfall is an aftertaste, but a big glass of soymilk makes up for that

ive had the vegan gourmet before and i thought it was kinda tasteless

i cant wait to try the tofutti cheese pizza

I make only 2 things with Tofutti cheese: I melt a slice of the American flavor on Yves Canadian bacon (I put a lid over the pan to help melt it) and put it on an english muffin. I also occassionally use the mozzarella slices to make eggplant parm. I wouldn't dare eat it without melting it first.....it seems like it would be gross, plus it's kind of greasy. Like scareyvegan, I wasn't impressed with the Vegan Gourmet brand either. I had Vegan Rella once and thought it was gross. I think that I'm just never going to find a vegan cheese that is anywhere near as good as real cheese. But that's okay, I really don't miss it.

I find it interesting that in the substitute cheese game, that the substitues aspire to be the worst "cheeses" the "cheeses" that I woudn't dare leave rot in my refridgerator because gawsh darn it, these "cheeses" are cruel and unusual punishment EVEN FOR MOLD, and somehow tofutti manages to make something that is even worse than the worst-tasting dairy "cheese" (which actually frequently is little more than soy milk and whey solids. Calling these things "cheeses" is an insult to the billions of hard working microorganisms that have worked hard to create a wide variety of favors.)

Now if someone managed to make a vegan stilton, a fresh vegan "buffalo milk" mozzarella (which can't be shreded if done properly). Then, we'd be talking.

Until then, there is always avocato.

What!!?? Tofutti Cheese slices rock my socks! They taste so freaking good on veggie sandiwches! Oh man! You must be on crazy pills if you don't like them. Or, you just dont like them, which is okay.

The Tofutti pizza is so good Caroline! I love the things. My only complaint is that they are a bit oily.
As for Tofutti cheese slices, they melt for me. I melt them over vegetables, baked pasta and casseroles without any trouble.

I like the tofutti pizza, and the cream cheese, but I can't deal with the cheese slices. I haven't liked any vegan cheese slices or blocks, yet. :( It's all tasted like an attempt for the companies to package and sell vomit.Blech. ::imagines herself inventing a good tasting vegan cheese and becoming rich beyond her wildest dreams::

I also found that the tofutti cheese doesn't melt well, but I thought it tasted o.k. I was using Veggie Slices, but they have casein. I saw a couple of other brands that were vegan at my natural foods store, so I'll have to give those a try.

I like tofutti so far. The thing is that remembering the taste of regular cheese suddenly makes me want to puke :spew:

I love tofutti in sandwiches. I just put a slice between two slices of bread, make sure it's as flat as it can be and put the whole sandwich into the toaster. Then after my "toast" pops up I pry it apart and add all the other fixin's to the sandwhich. It's yummy that way.

I don't mind the other Tofuttii things, like the Sour Supreme or the Better than Cream Cheese, (even though they're all hydrogenated oils) but the smell of the slices makes me want to puke. Ugh, that stinky smell sticks to your hands- it smells like someone's stinky feet.

Oh punkmommy, Tofutti has now come out with no hydrogenated oil versions of everything! I just picked up some of the new sour supreme and the better than cream cheese, and they are both great! I can eat them with less guilt now.

Really??? I've been avoiding most Tofutti products like the plague for months cause of the hydrogenated oils... i'll have to check that out ;-)

Have they really! Wow, I remember hearing that, but I didn't know it had happened already! Woo-Hoo! Did it change the smell of the slices? My son loves them, but I hate giving them to him because they stink so much ( but I do buy them for him :smitten: ) I like the tofuttii pizza, it reminds me of those cheap pizzas I use to eat as a kid.

 So true! My stepsons wouldn't even touch them. "They smell and taste funny, Molly!". I was so happy when I found them, then so disappointed. :(
