Does anyone have any experience with protein powders?

I am vegetarian at the moment and considering going vegan. Most protein powders have dairy if my research is correct.

I am already a marathon runner and am going to start going to the gym to bulk up.

Any general advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I started using this stuff:
http://www.veganessentials.com/catalog/vegan-brown-rice-protein-powder-by-nutribiotic.htm

I first got one single serve package of each to figure out which flavor I preferred. Loved the chocolate...as always...and got it as well as a vanilla to use in cooking (like protein pancakes)

:)

Which flavor did you end up choosing?

Also, if you have used regular protein powders, is this stuff just as good?

I got the chocolate and the vanilla. The chocolate I use post-workout and the vanilla I use in recipes such as my oatmeal protein pancakes because vanilla tends to taste good in those types of things.

Also I've used this:

In fact I am thinking of buying this again soon, in the Dark Chocolate flavor :D

As for comparing it to things like whey protein-- to me it's been absolutely fine. The taste is good (and the hemp protein IMO is better tasting than whey brands I've had pre-veganism). They do what they need to do as well :). Oh, and I've found that most vegan protein powders I use have less sugar (artificial or natural) than the other products I've used pre-veganism which is always good!

Thanks for your help, I'll probably end up buying the rice powder and see how it works. I like the idea of using it in recipes, will have to find some good recipes.

I used to use some soy protein stuff that I'd get from GNC. I checked their site, and I think it might have been Soy Protein 95. I always got vanilla & it was delicious.

I've used a few different types (in the UK), I've used soy isolate and brown rice isolate too, which are just the protein powder and not like a shake or mix thing. I've also used the protein shakes with the flavour and thickener and things in.

I mix mine with milk (sometimes soy milk) and I found that the brown rice isolate didn't mix very well at all, it was still lumpy and powdery and didn't taste great. I was using that because that's what I heard Mac Danzig uses. Well, my vegetarian jiu jitsu teacher was using it for that reason, and suggested I try it. I like the soy one much better, that mixes well and I think i'm just used to the taste of soy.

the milkshake type ones I've had because they were on sale, but they're generally whey protein which I think isn't as good as soy protein. Although they properly taste like milkshake!

My nutritionist wants me to find a soy protein (vegan of course) that has little fat and sugars and is a good source of protein. I have never purchased one before and am not sure what would be the best. I need something that is good for running, soccer and hot yoga. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hemp protein is highly regarded as a vegan protein powder. You might want to check that out?

But isn't Vega more of a meal replacement shake than a protein shake?

I just started to use this: http://www.genuinehealth.com/vegan-proteins.html
I found it at GNC.

Per heaping scoop: 20g protein, 118.5 cal, 1.5 fat, 6.6 carbs.

I also have some Vega, and yes it's more meant for a smoothie... but can be used in baking or whatever.

Per pkg: 120 cal, 4.5 fat, 6g fiber, 1g sugar, 14 g protein.
