View Full Version : Hypocrisy?

I just recently learned that a prominent vegan activist, one who I have admired for many years, has taken his family on vacations to places like Disney's Animal Kingdom and Chicago's Shed Aquarium.
I won't mention this activist's name, so as to protect the guilty. But what do others think? Am I over-reacting in being upset about this? Or is this a case of blatant hypocrisy?

Has this activist made it clear in the past that he is anti-zoo and anti-aquarium? If so, then he is in my opinion being quite hypocritical. If he hasn't, then it's a matter of opinion really as I've seen some on this board who are pro-zoo despite doing activism work for animal rights.

He has never made any comments specifically about zoos or aquariums, but his full time job consists of promoting veganism. He has even written a book on the topic.

Veganism the eating habits, or veganism the lifestyle?
I admit that in my personal opinion I would consider it hypocritical, I'm more trying to figure out his reason for perhaps thinking it isn't

Well, veganism period.
Though, all his writings and advocacy have focused on farm animals.

maybe he thinks its the best way for his kids to experience the horror of animals in captivity, and to actually see these creatures up close. maybe he leaflets while he's there. maybe he's sussing it out so he can liberate things later. people are weird and contrary. i'd expect nothing less from vegans- cos they're people too, for the mostpart. :)

Apparently Eugene is referring to Erik Marcus.

Apparently Eugene is referring to Erik Marcus.
what makes that apparent then?

Well, I don't want to confirm or deny any names. If I say that it is not Eric Marcus, then you'll bring up a second name. If I say that it is not the second name, then you'll bring up a third name. And if I say, "No comment" to the third name, then you'll know it is the third name.

Veganism is a lifestyle not a diet.

Veganism is a lifestyle not a diet.
You should know me well enough to know that I know that. But that doesn't mean that everyone else does. There are plenty of strict vegetarians out there calling themselves "dietary vegans" and just plain old "vegan". There are people out there who promote a "vegan diet" yet don't explore the lifestyle of it all, such as things like leather and wool.

How do you know he went to those places?

I actually saw the family vacation photos.
OK, I'll break my rule, and admit that it was not Eric Marcus. But I won't confirm or deny any additional names. And let's just say that there are a number of people who fit the profile I described.

This is the reason I stated it.

I'm not sure.
Was the rubber tires on his vehicle he drove to the places from vegan or non-vegan sources?
And welcome to the next round of 'lets play the veganer-than-thou game'!
