as much as I despise them *shudder* I always catch them like under a glass and set them free outside.

theres a product called cedarcide

its a repellant... doesnt harm anything
and its safe for use around children, domesticated and wild animals

you spray your foundation with it, sprinkle the granules in the grass, and put some under your sinks, in closets and cabinets and they stay away

also repells ticks, fleas, etc etc etc

check it out

some stores sell it, mainly walmarts and loews

http://www.cedarcide.com/BuyCC.asp
check here for your local stores that sell it

unfortunately, i wasnt able to buy it in louisiana.... so i got mine off of mastergardening.com
their shipping was really cheap, considering we are talking about gallons of liquid and granules

its good stuff, and its so safe, you can use it as a flea dip for your dog to prevent fleas

oh yeah, i forgot to mention.... you must like the smell of cedar... because it does smell!

Make sure you never leave dishes in the sink, that your sinks are always dry, and that all the ways they can get into your house are closed off, and that'll go a long way. :)

Other than that, I just catch them and throw them outside. It doesn't bother me so much to kill something like a mosquito that is biting me, but cochroaches are so large it's like killing a small animal!

Sometimes, if they're very smart and keep getting away, I get tired and kill them. All dumb ones make it outside though. :D

Edit: And definitely never leave food on the counter or table!

scareyvegan, thank you so much for this information! I just ordered a bunch of cedarcide from mastergarderer. I was looking for something natural that would repel fleas.

It is so surprising to hear other people wanting solutions to the same things I worry about, like keeping the bug population in the house under control without killing them. My friends have generally been fairly tolerant of my views (and I have even convinced one to stop stomping on spiders in the house), but humane bug control is still generally at the bottom of everybody's list.

When I was little, if there were flies in the house, my dad would pay us a quarter per fly caught to be put outside. The funny thing was that we did it with aquarium nets (no fly swatters allowed), and the rule was that if the fly was knocked out or hurt, we did not get paid (and got a lecture of sorts on being kind).

speaking of spiders-yesterday a coworker pulled a baby spider out of my hair, threw it on the floor and then stomoed on it. I told her I couldn't belive she killed a spider in front of me and she asked what would I have liked her to do. I told her to tell me it was there and then I would have pulled it out of my hair and then let it go outside! Some people, I mean it really broke my heart....

it got rid of fleas in my house when felix was infested

i think it could work well in your house, but it would mean dips for all your animals

Man, I'm glad there aren't any cockroaches in my house, or if there are any, they have the good manners to stay out of my sight. Isn't there a sound device that gets rid of bugs? I think I'm just gonna try to keep from moving anywhere with alot of big bugs...

No fleas in Alaska, hooray! And minimal roaches too. I remember the fleas and (ugh) lice in Florida. It was HORRIBLE! In Iowa my friend tried everything to get rid of roaches in her house and they just kept coming in droves. (blech!) Yet another reason I'm so happy to be up here!

....mosquitos on the other hand.... !!!

from a traveler's website:

Dead mutant mosquito. This is a small one! They're anywhere from the size of a dime, to a quarter, and they hunt you down!
