I've never been a huge candy fan, but every now and then a candy bar sounds good. Snickers has always been one of my favorites (in spite of hating peanuts and not being huge on chocolate) and they're definitely not vegan friendly (not only do they have milk chocolate in them, but eggs, too).
So when I heard about Go Max Go's line of vegan candy bars coming on the market (Jokerz - vegan Snickers, Twilight - vegan Milky Way, Mahalo - vegan Almond Joy and Buccaneer - vegan Three Muskateers), I was excited to say the least. They're expensive ($2.49 each for 2 ounces from Cosmo's Vegan Shoppe (http://www.cosmosveganshoppe.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=GMGCB&Category_Code=NP&Product_Count=0)), but vegan chocolate (other than your average dark chocolate bar, probably because they're made my the big mainstream companies while non-dairy milk chocolate seems to be a small company thing) usually is, so I can look past it. I don't eat candy very often anyway, so it's not going to be a bank breaker for me.
Obviously, these aren't going to be good for you by any stretch of the imagination. Jokerz have 280 calories and 15 grams of fat, Twilights have 250 calories and 9 grams of fat. That's roughly equivalent to a standard candy bar, if I remember right. This is junk food, pure and simple.
Right now, I've only tried the Jokerz bar since I'm trying not to eat more than one per day , but I'll be trying and updating on the Twilight within the next couple of days.
Jokerz
Flavor: "Snickers" type. Caramel, peanuts, nougat and rice-milk chocolate.
Taste: Delicious! Similar to Snickers only not so tooth-achingly sweet. I actually prefer this to the real thing, believe it or not. Very satisfying for me since I was having a Snickers craving. I planned on eating half the bar, but before I knew it, it was gone.
Texture: Softer than Snickers with fewer peanuts (a good thing in my book). Nice and chewy.
Would I buy them again? Definitely! I wish they were cheaper, but I'm just grateful to be able to get them. Period. When I want a candy bar, I generally really want a candy bar. These would be great for parents of vegan children who don't mind their kids eating the occasional candy bar. :D
Twilight
Flavor: "Milky Way" type. Caramel, chocolate nougat, rice-milk chocolate.
Taste: These remind me more of turtles (the chocolate caramel candies with pecans) only without the nuts, than Milky Ways, but they're very yummy all the same. Like the Jokerz bars, these aren't as cloyingly sweet as the real deal, which is a good thing for me. I can see kids liking these even though they're not as sugary as a traditional milk chocolate candy bar.
Texture: Denser than fresh Milky Ways and more chewy, but very close otherwise.
Would I buy them again? Yes, but I'd pick the Jokerz bars over Twilight bars just because I've always been a bigger fan of Snickers than Milky Ways. I prefer non-chocolate nougat, personally, and I like the texture the peanuts give the Jokerz bars. These are very good, though, and I'll definitely buy more now and then. Like the Jokerz bars, I can see these being a hit with kids, even though they're not quite as sweet as traditional non-vegan candy bars.
