I usually use the machines, but the ones available at the gym I go to aren't very good. I follow the instructions very carefully, yet I feel muscles that I do not intend to exercised being exercised. (e.g. on the chest machine, I feel my triceps getting a workout)

Specifically, I’m focusing on the upper body.

Thanks!

www.bodybuilding.com has got a lot ..free weight or not.

You should probably check your form on some of those exercises.

But the other thing to remember is, you have your primary muscles being targeted and your auxiliary muscles. With big muscle groups like chest, back and quads, it's difficult to do isolation exercises (and i don't really see the point in iso-exercises anyway).
But for biceps, triceps and other small muscles, it's quite easy to isolate them.

And finally, free weights target your muscles from 3 dimensions as oppose to 2 dimensional machines. So if you want to do isolation exercises, you might as well just stick to machines. But to build muscle... free weights all day.
