View Full Version : How do you breathe when you run?

Yesterday I started breathing differently and I noticed my endurance went way up. Instead of breathing strictly from my mouth like I've always done, I started breathing in my nose and out of my mouth, and I found that I was getting far more air in upon inspiration this way. Meaning I was using more of my lung capacity for some reason. It also helps me to keep my breaths slow and even.
So how do you breathe when you run?

When i run, i listen to aggressive/emotional music. It tends to take over the show so i don't even think of my breathing. When i've not used music, it's much harder.

In through my nose, out through my mouth in smooth, even breaths like you mentioned.
It was well over 90 when I went running late yesterday (about 7pm) and was fine until my ipod pooped out halfway through (I lost concentration)... I need to remember to charge it more often... :)

I also breathe in through my nose and out of my mouth. (As much as I can, I have allergies) I've also found it useful to breathe in rhythm to my footfalls.
And I also like to run to aggressive music. :)

Oh yeah, if I'm not running to something aggressive (or my favorite: dance rock) then my mind says HELL NO I AIN'T RUNNIN!

I run with my mouth open. I breathe through my mouth or my nose or both. It is a pretty steady breathe , not gasping at all.

Mostly I breathe in nose, out mouth. I don't run with music. I either listen to the birds or a downloaded book. If I'm really into a book, I run faster. "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" had me running as fast as I can.

I breath in through both my mouth and nose... but I get nasty allergies. I'd probably pass out if I tried to breath in just through my nose. :)

That's funny, I'm the opposite. I usually put on some Slowdive (or something similar) before I head out for a run or a bike ride. That way I feel like I'm floating.

Always in through the nose and out through the mouth. My mouth gets too dry otherwise.

I breath in and out through the mouth, and I've always done it this way. Hmm, perhaps I'll try the other method. I time my breathing to my footfalls, 2X2, and I find that it helps with preventing side stitches.

I LOVE Slowdive! But I could never run to it hahaha. Biking is good for slower stuff though, no doubt.

The correct way to breathe when you run is not to think about it.
And sorry, but all this breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth is absolute crap if you're putting any effort into it.

Long steady breaths in and out using nose + mouth... plus I make sure to breathe deeply (ie: no shallow breaths allowed). I think depth of breath is the key factor to me when it comes to long runs or swims (also when it comes to singing well!)

I was taught in through nose, out through mouth is the correct way. Something to do with regulating oxygen intake.
I'm not so good at it, though!

Maybe the reason you're not so good at it is because this theory is a load of baloney.

It may be a load of bologna but it sounds like for some people it works. Maybe it is psychological but still :)

I agree with Licence. If you are breathing in through your nose out through your mouth or any kind of formulated method then you are spending too much time thinking about it. What is important is not to be gasping for air. If you are new to running I recommend a heart rate monitor. Start out slow and work on your endurance. You will notice that after a while you will be able to spike your heart rate by running up a hill or doing sprints, then go back to normal relaxed pace until you get your heart rate back down. Don't spend all your time focused on breathing as long as your not gasping for air!!

I think for someone new to running form is way more important to be focusing on. I can not tell you how many runners I see out everyday that have horrible running form. It is so much more important then how you are breathing. Your arms should be relaxed at your side, shoulders down. I see so many runners with their arms way up high by their boobs. it is such a waste of your energy. Abs should be in tight, pelvic tilted. Your feet should strike in the middle.

haha I was just being self-deprecating, I know if you build fitness you will get into this elusive "zone".
I got relatively good at it for a while. But it's just so boring that it isn't worth it to me. There are far more interesting exercises out there.

when i run i breathe in with my nose and mouth and breathe out with my mouth. i feel like i'm getting the most air in and out that way. when i just breathe through my nose i can't get enough air in and i struggle more even though allot of people say it's better. i guess i'm not the only one who thinks the "nose method" sucks...

Through my nose and out my mouth. My friend taught me that because I use to get cramps when I ran. Now I don't.
