Euurrgh!!
I visited my relatives on Saturday, and went shopping in Canterbury (UK). I went into a department store called Fenwick (previously known as Ricemans), only to find REAL FUR clothing being sold, and lots of it! :whack:
Fur jackets (whole jackets!), fur scarves, fur collard coats... ugh. I left very angry and disgusted, after making a few (loud) comments.
It seems that fur is very "in" this year. This is worrying me very much, especailly with winter approaching and people wanting the latest designer coats, scarves etc.
Although there are organisations against fur, I feel that I might design a campaign website, with a list of fashion designers to boycott, letter writing ideas, campaign updates etc. What do you think? I noted down the name of every item of clothing that used real fur while I was in the store, so have a reasonable list already.

Why are you so suprised? Fur is "in" every year, and its in almost every clothing store....it's horrible, but I think you're over-reacting.

i was in this store in crappy seaport village (cluster of dumb gift shops) and one of the stores had stuffed animals (the toys) made out of real fur. strange.
Fur is promoted quite extensivly this year.
The "industry" is trying to build a new image on the "good" of fur.
There must an organisation in the UK that does something about fur and if you report it to them, they might send a letter to the store.
You could do it yourself too, and you could also send a letter to the editor of the local paper.

I read in The Guardian that most of the fur being used as trim in Europe is a combo of rabbit and places that euthanize pets. I'll find the article and post it. Pretty nasty.
Well I read that some (cheap) fur (for pillows and edges of coats) comes from china.
This seems to be dog and cat fur.
They used to export it to the USA but after the ban by the Humane society (?) they can't sell it to the us anymore.
I'll see if I can find a link.

"The primary use of dog and cat fur is not for full-length fur coats, but for fur-trim parkas, gloves, hats, toys, and other accessories. Fur-covered animal figurines also frequently use dog and cat fur—an estimated 20% of all the figurines made, in fact (the balance of fur comes from rabbits and goats). "

Here's (http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,3604,875475,00.html) the article I was referring to.

Thanks for all the info.
You see, where I normally shop, all the stores are aimed at teens. The only fur product I saw was a real fur cat curled up in a basket (known as Ships Cats), which I reported to CAFT and has now been eliminated from sale from that store. So there is no fur where I live (that I've seen recently)... when I saw so much in Fenwick, it was very shocking.
I can't help over-reacting when I see skinned animals draped on coat-hangers. They signify so much greed and arrogance. People in third world countries haven't even got a pair of socks, and yet we have people in our selfishly polluted world spending £600 on one unnecessary, hideous and perfectly useless jacket.
You know, I find it very bizarre that anyone still buys fur, let alone wears it. Almost everyone I know in my age group (30-something) saw the seal clubbing video in elementary school and thinks fur is sick. And I'm not talking about vegetarians or AR people. I'm talking about run-of-the-mill, omnivorous, leather-wearing, Proctor & Gamble buying people.
I guess they need to start showing that video in elementary schools again.
*shivers*
I don't have a (big) problem with "graphic" pictures, but I had a fur-video once and I had big problems viewing the whole "how fur is caught in the wild" part.
Ewwwww........

I haven't seen any of these fur videos but I don't need to in order to know that it is an inhumane process. I always think of the Ace Ventura movie where Jim Carrey sees someone wearing fur shawl and so he proceeds to sling a human over his shoulders in the same way. I went to a sporting goods store in the local mall a few months ago and they had all sorts of real stuffed animals on display. Well, they had a human figure (plastic of course) as part of the display and I was just appalled that they felt the need to used real instead of plastic animals to display.
I actually had the impression that fur was going out. Now if we could only stop the production of leather.
