Wow, what a stupid move on behalf of the soldier who walked into the cage to "feed" the tiger.

Great. Another fine example to the world of American genius.

Those on currently on deployment in Afganistan and Iraq are not drinking, they are not allowed, as it is US policy to abid the traditions and cust of the land deployed in....now as for openly walking in to a tigers cage to feed it....is well not right and who ever ordered that soldier to feed the tiger should have first trained him as to how. A tragic loss, of a beautiful beast.

I think that they do have alcohol I mean they can just go into a store and take it.

Actually, my husband just returned from his deployment there a couple of months ago and said that drinking did indeed occur.
Many soldiers were able to very easily obtain all sorts of alcohol and even some drugs on the black market. They are not suppose to drink while deployed but it does happen. The story of the tiger is very sad but it is only one case.
As much as I would like to say that US soldiers are all good, respectable people, some are far from it. He had many stories of soldiers causing harm to animals for amusement (such as shooting at dogs and camels). It was that deplorable behavior which was the final straw in his decision to stop eating meat.
He brought home a picture of puppies eating their mother who had apparently been a casualty of war. It's all just so sad.

I'm sorry, but if the soldier was going to do something that stupid, then he deserves punishment.. Who cares about the tiger attacking...? it was the soldiers mistake. I have no sympathy for people who do stupid things out of drunkenness.

ITA. No sympathy for the soldier. We assume that these soldiers are responsible adults. This act doesn't seem responsible to me.

And the punishment could include a compensation payout for the death. Is that all? This beautiful endangered animal is gone. It's bad enough that these poor animals have to deal with habitat loss due to stupid human interference but now they have to deal with stupid drunken soldiers? GRRRR!!!!

Endangered species or not, at least the tiger won't have to live a sad life emprisoned in a shabby cage any more! Better, MUCH better for the animal. At least it died a fast death.
And the soldier will always remember his stupidity, marked for life, right?
