I honestly don't see much difference between dog fighting and betta fish fighting. Both are sickening sports that make you want to push those people into a lake full of sharks, hungry sharks...
Anyway, I have read topics on the subject and it bothers me so much. This is what I have gathered from my readings...
They have a bate fish...A female betta is placed in the tank before the fight for basically the males practice dummy. Then in the fight. They fight until one gives up, the loser, runs away and the fight is over. Unless both are strong and will not give up they will fight to the death or near death.
I love Betta Fish, I believe they think and they are intelligent. But this is horrible. I have seen video's where people get like 10 male betta's and just through them into a tank together and have them fight. DISGUSTING!!
What are your thoughts on this monstrous sport?

It's all one and the same. Dog fighting, cock fighting, fish fighting, the spider vs scorpion thing.

It's gross. I used to work at PetSmart and some guy came in asking about the betta fish. He was not experienced, he was more asking if "they would fight" and was asking about oscars and other types of fish that can be more aggressive. When I realized that he was more than just curious and was actually interested in trying it out, I told him I couldn't sell him any fish.

It's digusting. It makes me too angry to really express how I feel, if you know what I mean. Like Kiz said, they're all one in the same. The type of animals these sick people use don't really matter. :(

Idiots! I don't understand why people do this. I even saw a video on youtube where 2 box turtles were put together to fight and they made it into a comedy skit with sports commentators and instant replay. Even though the turtles are moving very slowly towards each other they were still biting each other. Most the people who made comments on it thought it was funny. A few said it was mean and one person said their turtle died from infection getting bit by another turtle. Everyone got mad at those who said something bad about it and said the turtles are not getting hurt. That's a lie, they were biting each other.

In my opinion, anyone that encourages animals to fight is sick.

I was in Wal-Mart one time, and I was looking at the bettas and noticed an empty cup. I looked at another cup to see that two had been placed in that one. I don't know why someone would be sick and stupid enough to do it, but thankfully, they hadn't been fighting. So I took went to their little sink with the empty cup and the cup with 2 bettas, took a net, and placed one of the bettas back in the empty cup. I know that sounds crazy, but I wasn't going to just let the 2 fish stay there. Stupid people...

That doesn't sound crazy at all! I'm glad you came along to help them.

good move on your part.
If I knew someone was to fight fish, even not my fish, I would refuse to let them but the fish. So did you think he was planning on like fighting Oscars and betta's or something stupid like that:(
Sick, I love my fishie friends, most of my fish are like aggressive breeds too, 2 betta's and 4 Oscars. I would never even consider the fact of fighting them...Any animal in fact.

That thing with the tortoises was also cruel. Making poor little turtles fight and then people say they where not hurt:(

Forcing animals to fight is one of the more bizarre human compulsions that has stuck with us throughout history....
I'm guessing it's born of cowardice. Animal abusers want to see a fight but are too cowardly to fight each other....

This is why I only watch kitten fighting, and here's how that goes:

1. The kittens wrestle. No bloodshed.
2. They chase each other around.
3. They usually do this funny thing where they hop around each other and sometimes make faces at each other. Then they wrestle again.

No actual violence. No one gets hurt.

I just don't see the appeal of actual, real animal fighting. It's just...sick. There's no excuse for it.

Unless you live in Thailand, you should not consider releasing your betta into the wild (and because of disease concerns, not even then).

The release of domestic pets into natural areas not only dooms the former pets, it also ends up causing problems for and spreading disease to wild critters.

Since you already have your fish, you should instead strive to care for him as best you can, such as keeping him in a properly filtered aquarium rather than a cup. And also, keeping him away from animal-abusive friends.
