I just bought some of these "turkey" slices today (the hickory flavor, they come in original, hickory and peppered). For those who don't have a hang up about analogs that taste very meat-like these rock! They are sliced much more thinly than the Yves variety, more like actual deli slices. The flavor is very tasty, rather mild without an excess of flavoring agents (read: not so smokey that you feel like you're chewing on a campfire log). The only drawback is that they do contain 1.5 grams of fat per slice, whereas Yves is fat-free. But, the deliciousness outweighs the fat (heh, heh).

Where can I find these? WF, Harry's? I'm tired of the Yves turkey, and have you smelled them when they've gone over? Eww.

1.5 grams of fat is a drawback? wow.. that's practically nothing. fat is important to eat, you know. mmm, i just had about 20g of fat in my almond butter & jelly sandwich...
sorry for going a little off-topic, i just don't understand why fat has gotten such a bad rap. heck, you probably worked off 1.5g of fat just by typing that original post :)

I have tried them too, they are quite tasty. Personally, I'm not a fan of Yves Turkey, they taste like the smell of wet dog. :stinkeye:

I had the yves ham today, not too bad, but yes, veeerry smoky...
I plan to eat it quickly just in case it doesn't last...
Can you cook these things or does that just leave them rubbery?

I'm not too down on fat, stonecrest, I was just setting up for a really bad pun. I takes my chances were I can get 'em.
I bought the Yves turkey, but I think I'll leave it for my billy goat husband to eat while I dine on Tofurkey instead. Now I'm more convinced than ever to get one of those Tofurkey Turkeys for Thanksgiving. The "beef" jerky rocks as well.

The Tofurkey turkeys are so great, we get them even when it's not a holiday. Some mashed potatoes and gravy...mmm.

For a quick sandwich nothing beats Tofurkey with Veganaise. Also, Torfurkey slices heated up in a pan (with a tiny bit of water) for a couple of minutes put on toast with vegan gravy (the powdered kind you just mix with water from the health food store-I think Hain makes one) makes a great hot sandwich.

Ooo I love Tofurkey slices! I've never had a hunk of tofurkey at holiday times or anything but I adore the slices! :) :) I wish they sold them at the supermarket. There I usually go with Smart Deli Turkeyish Slices.

heh.. I really dig puns...
and sc, she would have had to be typing for 20 minutes, at least, to have the chance to burn 1.5 grams of fat. hehehe.... (yes, I'm picking on you because you ruined her pun!! :p ;) )

Yes, I often make the Tofurkey/Vegenaise sandwich myself. I use Ciabatta Rolls, Vegenaise, Romaine Lettuce and Tofurkey slices. MMMM!
Your kitty reminds me of mine, he is also a black kitty cat.

i've never tried tofurkey anything. i hope my grocery store gets the slices, i don't like yves turkey slices that much either. i like the salami and the ham though. the turkey tastes like bologna to me, if i wanted bologna i'd buy bologna ;)
yeah you can cook them. Kreeli had posted a great suggestion for a cheap vegan "turkey dinner" which i tried last thanksgiving. you wrap a turkey slice around a glob of stuffing, put it on a baking sheet and coat it with oil and toss it in the oven til it browns around the edges a bit. yummmm! but i still would prefer a different brand of turkey slices next time i try it.
also to use up some of the ham slices before they went off on me, i fried some recently. they're yummy fried :lick: you can make a fried bologna sandwich with the turkey slices, or what us northerners call a "corbeil steak sandwich" apparantly (according to my boyfriend but i always called them fried bologna sandwiches lol)
just slice slits from the edge towards the centre so when the slices cook they don't curl up

My fav is Smart Deli, tastes like the real thing, I think it's tons better then Yves!
Hmmm. I usually eat Smart Deli myself, but I think I'm getting a hankerin' for some Tofurkey slices after reading this thread! Haven't had them in quite a while!
The gravy & toast thing sounds absolutely divine. :lick:

i dont like the tofurky turkeys... but the slices are great
for holidays, i take them, put stuffing on them, and roll them up
then bake them
they come out kinda crispy on the top, soft on the bottom, and the stuffing tastes wonderful inside

Scareyvegan, I was thinking of getting a Tofurkey this year based upon my good experience with the slices. What don't you like about the actual Tofurkey?
scareyvegan

i think the texture is gross
and the extras come with it are even nastier
giblet gravy... ugh!!
the stuffing isnt even good
i rather just make my own stuffing and gravy and purchase just the slices
it saves up on money too
the only redeeming quality about the feast is the tempeh drumsticks, those are yummy
hehe, id buy them if they sold them seperately

I agree Scarey that the stuffing is not too great. However, I love the Tofurkey, but I HATE the tempeh drumsticks! Ha. So next Thanksgiving, that means more drumsticks for you, more tofurkey for me :p

After you wrap the slice around the stuffing, do you need to put a toothpick in it to hold it together while baking, so it doesn't roll open when you take them out? This is probably a stupid question, but can you put toothpicks in the oven?
