View Full Version : No Period For Several Months

Hi everybody,

I'm getting a bit concerned. I haven't had a period in several months, ~10 or so. The doctor said not to worry, but he's never missed a period (har har). He didn't give me any tests, just asked some questions and poked around on my belly.

I've always had an irregular cycle. It was once every 2-3 months before I started the pill, and when I was on the pill they told me to only take a break every other month because I was bleeding so much I had to go to hospital a couple times.

I've been off the pill for... hm... 10 or 11 months now. Not sure, but definitely less than a year.

I'm NOT underweight. I'm not "obese" either, I'm not even really fat, I'm a bit chubby on my arms, chest, and thighs. I don't tend to carry a lot around the middle, I gain "Popeye fat" as I like to call it.

I eat well, sleep plenty, and while I'm not exactly living on a beach, I've been much more stressed than I am now before and I got my period back then.

Lastly, I'm not pregnant. Besides the fact that I think I would have a baby by now if that were the case, I took regular pregnancy tests back when I was sexually active... which isn't the case lately due to a little health problem my boyfriend is experiencing right now... :-/

Anyway, I had to have an X-Ray a week ago so they gave me a pregnancy test at the hospital, which was negative. So no baby.

So, Dr. Veggieboards?
Diagnosis?
:help:

Go to another doctor for a second opinion. It sounds like your doc isn't taking you very seriously. There could be something wrong with your health that is causing you to lose your period for this long. Then again, you were irregular before and apparantly having no period is not considered a huge concern until you have reached the 12 month mark.
some basic info is here (http://www.womenshealth.org/a/secondary_amenorrhea.htm)

Should've mentioned that. I certainly hope it's not "the change" at my age... I'm 22 years old!

Useful link, thank you :)

Yeah, looks like I've got another couple months to go before any doctors start to give a toss... :-/

Hm, are you getting all your nutrients? If you're malnourished you may lose your period. By "doctor" do you mean gyn? If not maybe you should see one, I'd want a second opinion. I'm guess you're not pregnant because you probably would've realized it in the past 10 months lol

Period loss is actually a pretty serious symptom, there's something going on with your body to stop it. I'm surprised the doctor wasn't too worried.

I'm pretty sure I'm getting all my nutrients... I'm kind of fanatical about it actually... If I don't think I'm getting enough of something I take a supplement and I keep a food diary so I can keep track.

LOL I hope I'd have realized I was pregnant in that time...

See, that's what I thought but doctors don't seem to think it's so bad... :-/ I just keep asking whenever I see the doctor, and I don't have a regular GP so it's usually a different doctor each time. I've been asking for the last 8 months or so. I think you're right, maybe I should make an appointment with a gyn specifically for this reason.

The sucky part is, I don't miss my periods AT ALL. I used to have truly frightening periods. As in, wake up thinking I've wet the bed only to find myself completely drenched in blood. As in, hospital visit bad.

But I also know that not having them is bad too.. :-/

has anyone tested you for PCOS? might be worth asking about/reading up on.

Not yet....

Wikipedia says the common symptoms of PCOS include oligomenorrhea/amenorrhea, infertility, hirsutism, hair loss, acne, oily skin, seborrhea, obesity, depression, deepening of voice. Either I'm extremely uncommon, or I don't have it (which is the option I'm rooting for...).

I only have the period problems, and perhaps the infertility, who knows... I've never tried to get pregnant. I don't grow male body hair (face, chest, etc.), the hair on my head is thick, my skin is slightly oily but in the normal range, I'm not obese or depressed, and my voice is also in the normal female range and hasn't deepened at all.

Hm.

Ah crap.

What if being a vegan is suppressing some of the symptoms? Do you think it's possible? Some testimonials mentioned that giving up red meat and pork really helped... what if I'm suppressing almost everything?? I'm so worked up I'm not even sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing!!!

ok woah woah woah. no more looking anything up, lady. before you know it you'll have diagnosed yourself with testicular cancer. :p

sometimes there is a little wonky hormone thing of some kind playing a factor in your periods going away, but that doesn't have to be anything frightening or bizzarre, and its only a maybe. you might might all be entirely fine and your body might just have decided to mess with you a bit. could be all sorts of reasons- like even stress.

the thing to do, is go and ask someone who has the magical powers to work it out, and who takes you seriously. then whatever is going on, you'll be informed and able to work out what, if anything, needs doing, or you you might wish to do. :)

Not much help here, just in the same boat. Only a lot longer :(

Close to 3 years ago, I quit having my period and it stayed gone for about 14-15 months. Then I had one period (slight bleeding) then it lapsed again for quite a few months. I had one more and I have not had another for about 3 months. I went to, I think, 3 or 4 different doctors. I confused them all. The first said I had PCOS, the second said that was not possible. Another thought I may be going through early menopause. But I have none of the other symptoms that go along with that. And I have had 2 periods.. They have tested all the vitamins and such that I need and I am perfectly healthy. Some people have wanted to blame the lack of menstruation to me being vegan, but it started almost a year before I became vegan. To date, no one can figure out what's wrong with me. :( Some just want to put me on different medications and see if anything "happens" to work. That does not work for me. I took medications when I was younger for reasons that I now believe were unnecessary and caused other health problems. So, until they can give me a straight answer, I have just been researching on my own. Any ideas?

@born2shoplc:

I'm really sorry to hear that!! :-/ I hope we can both find some answers... I'm paying through the nose for physio at the moment, so paying for a gyno appointment will have to wait another month or so... in the meantime, keep your chin up.

Hmm, I went 7 months without a period, after just coming off the pill. I went to see my dr. and she wasn't concerned either. She gave me a prescription to make me get my period if I wanted to though. It was optional to take it or wait it out, until, I think if it was more than a year. I don't remember what it was called, but she said it would be really heavy if I took the pill. So, I opted to wait it out without the medication, and eventually it came. I actually kind of enjoyed not getting it, although, like you, I couldn't help but be a little concerned.

Are there any clinics around nearby that you can go to instead of waiting?

@ FitChick99
Yeah I think I'd like to avoid taking any medication... particularly since that's the whole reason I quit the pill in the first place.

@fadeaway
Not any free ones... :(
I'm moving back to Ontario in a month though, there are free ones there.
