i'm currently in a catch 22.
I want to do yoga to improve my flexibility but the exercises in yoga require some flexibility to begin with.
Can someone tell me the basic yoga exercises for improving flexibility in the spine.
thanks

You don't need to be flexible to start yoga - hardly anyone can do any of the poses "correctly" at first.
The most basic yoga asanas actually focus on the spine, starting with the Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation). I suggest going to a beginner's class and tell the teacher about your need to focus on the spine.
Just be patient and don't force it - yoga is not a fast process but its well worth it.

Yoga requires no flexibility to start, as the above poster was saying, but you will quickly develop it. A big part of yoga is taking your ego out of it though and being ok with where you body is at, at any given time.
I saw a completly out of shape 56 year old man who couldn't touch his toes or sit cross legged on the floor learn to do both, and more, given time, patience and an understanding that it was ok that he couldn't do it.
Going to a beggining class is the best idea. Don't just throw yourself into it. You need someone knowlegable who can give you corrections and modifications to poses. After you've learned how to do some safely you can begin practicing at home.
Good luck. Yoga has definitely changed my life and for the better. It is a lifelong journey, and one of the best things I have ever done for myself.

yup, as they said.
each posture is modified so that you get into the correct alignment that will develop the flexibility over time. this is why it is recommended to go to a qualified teacher for classes, to learn that process.
good luck and have fun!
