View Full Version : When are you supposed to feel sore (after strength training)?

After I do my weights workout, I don't usually feel sore until 24 hours afterwards, sometimes even not until 48 hours later.
My friend says this means it's an injury, and that I should feel sore immediately after the strength training session or the day after, not two days later. He says having it two days later is a sign that I overdid it (lifting too much weight).
I always thought the soreness is delayed at least a day or two, but that is the normal process of the muscles getting stronger.
I know there are some folks here who are trainers and such, can you please share your knowledge? THanks!!

I usually feel sore when I wake up the next day. I thought it meant injury when it hurt as you were doing it...

I always feel the most sore the day after. Even if I work out first thing in the morning, I don't feel sore until I wake up the next day.
Do you just feel sore that second day and then it goes away? Or is it a soreness that's affecting you for the better part of a week? I think if it goes away by the end of that day you're probably fine.

Let's say I work out Tuesday evening. I don't feel anything that night or Wednesday morning. I only start feeling it Wednesday night, and then the worst is Thursday morning when I wake up. By Thursday night it's better and then Friday - all gone...
Glad to hear I am not the only one :)

Yeah, I think that's normal. Everyone's body is a little different. I think if you were still sore on the following Monday, then you'd be overdoing it.

your friend has got it backwards, you should not feel sore during the workout or directly after, if you do, you overdid it or have developed an injury.
feeling sore 1-2 days after is normal and good, just drink lots of water and up the potassium (bananas are a great source) to help your muscles recover.

I always heard that DOMS is at it's worst 36 - 48 hours after and it often works that way for me.
If I've overdone it or strained something I tend to feel it an hour or so later.
