View Full Version : Bad 15k Experience

So, last year I walked my first 5k in the Gasparilla Distance Classic, and this year I walked my first 15k. What a difference! The people were SO MEAN.

I went up to the counter to get my bib and shirt and the guy gave me a much smaller size than I wear. When I told him that I had registered for a larger size and need to switch out the shirt he went, "Look, we're out. Not many people your size walk this thing, okay?" He just thrust the bag back at me, and I saw he was helping other people with their D-Tags which were amazingly hard to figure out as it happens (the adhesive wasn't as adhesivey as one would have liked).

Then, I approach the start knowing I'm going to be way in the back because I don't want the runners to have to pass me. People were openly mocking me and this other group of ladies who were obviously just there to walk. It was very weird.

There were various other bumps along the road, but in the end I ended up being asked if I, "even wanted," my finisher's medal because it took me so long (2 hours 35 minutes). I didn't get one - they ran out - and they begrudgingly handed me a card to have it mailed to me. I would normally not give a flying flip about it, but I told my students I was going to get one and I'd bring it in for them to see.

Grrr. I'm just mad because even though I know for a non-heavy person 15k is probably nothing, but I worked really hard to be able to do this. I thought I was going to feel great at the end, but I'm more just disappointed with people. I tried to be courteous and I got crapped on. I even paid for the stranger behind me when getting into the parking garage for a little bit of good will before the race!

I'm really sorry to hear that people were so rude to you. For the record, I'm a non-heavy person and I can't even fathom doing a 5k. So good for you! I hope you don't let their attitudes stop you from feeling proud of yourself.

Sorry about your bad experience. The first ever competitive run I did was also badly organised with idiots in charge.

1. The course was meant to be 5km, but later I found it was only 4.2km.

2. They never sent the photo I'd paid £5 for of me crossing the line.

(I'm not usually that vain, but as it was my first ever race and I thought I'd run a PB I thought I'd pay for this, but because of No.1, I in fact hadn't run a PB!)

3. When they issued the results on their website, half the names were missing, including mine.

I emailed them about all this, in a really nice way, and they were basically rude and unpleasant in response so I didn't pursue it.

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience. You should write a letter to whoever was organizing the race. It's not okay for people to treat you poorly no matter what you weigh, because you were walking or for any other reason.

Congrats on finishing the race! I'm training for my first 10 mile race (which is close to a 15K I believe) and it's no small feat to finish that distance. I'm hoping I'll be able to make it running, walking or crawling, however I can get there!

That's ridiculous. What haughty little jerks!

Size discrimination is something that seems t be the last politically correct "isim". I never understood why people are so hateful and contemptuous about size towards people who are obvious attempting healthy behaviors too.

I am proud of you and I am sure your students will be too. I second the suggestion to contact them and I would also ask that they send you the correct size of shirt too.

 I'm so sorry those jerks were mean to you. I also agree with contacting whoever was in charge. Nobody deserves to be treated like that. Don't let them bring you down. Be proud of yourself for finishing and sticking with it. There is no way I could do a 15k and if I tried it'd probably take me longer than 2hr and 35mins!

Oh, no. It didn't change any reflection I had of myself. It was just crummy and disappointing because generally I expect more from people.

15k, it turns out, isn't that long. It's only like 9.3 miles. (I'm American, so, sadly, I have no day-to-day use for kilometers like the rest of the world. That means its hard for me to develop self-reference points.)

I am sorry that they were so awful to you! How completely uncalled for. I'd send a letter to the organizers. As someone who helps run a huge charitable event every year, if I heard one of my volunteers was so blatantly rude I'd ask them not to come back.

ETA: And congrats on doing it! 9 miles is a lot! You should be super proud as I know you are :) Don't let some stupid people ruin your sense of accomplishment.

That guy's attitude was classic. I guess only slim people should do exercise and you must lose weight before starting a healthy lifestyle.

What an idiot.
