This is a huge pet peeve of mine. Most people on VB are good with this, but I still had to bring it up.

I have done some research to see if this "vegitarian" spelling I see so much is a legitimate spelling somewhere, and I don't think it is.

Memorize it: VEGETARIAN

I always kind of enjoy the "alternative" spelling of vegetarian, as well as the weird pronunciation of vegan (vay-gun). It's kind of quaint. Other commonly misspelled/misused words bother me more, like "seperate," "their/there," "it's/its" etc.

Dear atheists, learn to spell atheist correctly.

Here's a memory trick: think of it as "a rat" in the middle.

No, we don't believe in dog.

Or is that just the dyslexic sub-unit?

It USED to be a pet peeve of mine. I forced myself to get used to it because there's really nothing anyone can do about it. :-/

I pretty much gave up on expecting anybody to be able to spell anything perfectly, even if their native language is English, because of where I work. I work at a medical imaging facility. Forget about being able to spell medical terminology. Some of these people (receptionists, exam schedulers and x-ray technologists) can't even spell simple English words like "leg" correctly. :brood:

Let's look at it this way: English is a living language, which means that words go in and out of fashion and spellings can even change to fit the times. What we know as standardized spellings won't always be standardized. That's why Webster keeps revising and publishing dictionaries. Let's throw up our hands, throw in the towel, and accept all the weird spellings of vegitarian, vegetarion, etc. that we get. Maybe 200 years from now, vegitarian will be the accepted spelling and vegetarian will be considered the "alternate" spelling, or even an outmoded one.

Let's embrace change! :)

Oh god, this one gets me too. It's not so much everyday misspellings that are annoying (unless they are really blatant). I have lost my middle school spelling bee abilities for sure, but if you subscribe to a philosophy and want to talk or write about it, it makes you seem like a dumbass if you are spell it different.

I was kind of expecting somebody to post back and say "This is the right way to spell it in South Africa/New Zealand/some other English speaking country" but it looks like it's not. The VB spellchecker even catches "vegitarian!" Why do people ignore the little red lines???
