I was disappointed. I thought the acting was mediocre, and the story was predictable as well as depressing. And it certainly didn't do anything to make me want to visit India. I did like the dancing during the credits.

Why oh why?
This movie is way over hyped and the people of India are none to pleased with it either!

I thought it was a really good movie. However, it was very disturbing to see the slums of India and how people are treated. I have no idea how much "truth" is in that, and how much is Hollywood hype, but I'm sure they didn't make all of it up.

Without a doubt one of the best films I've seen in years. Classic story, amazing cinematography, very uplifting.
The realism of the background was great, especially as I had just returned from spending a month in India.
Its so refreshing to see something other than the usual formulaic crap spewed out of Hollywood.
Go see it.

Good movie, but will male characters ever be able to love merely semi-beautiful women? :|

I liked it but it wasn't as amazing as I had expected it to be.

I watched it tonight. I found it incredibly depressing and some scenes beyond disturbing and I had alot of trouble sitting through them. I almost had to stop watching halfway into the movie. I do agree that the cinematography was amazing, that it wasn't your typical "hollywood" crap movie and had an uplifting message but I was just really bothered by the whole thing. I viewed it as a serious movie and the dancing at the end, although cute seemed to cheapen the whole thing and felt totally out of place.

Quite the opposite. 'Gandhi' was the British white guilt film. Slumdog is actually a contraversial slap in the face of the Bollywood norm. Its a challange to Indian filmmakers to step away from the tired old escapist Bollywood musical formulas to make actual hard hitting films that deal with the huge social issues facing India today.

Danny Boyle's one of my favorite directors, so it's a must see for me. Not immediately, though.

My boyfriend is taking me to see this on Saturday for my birthday. I'm so excited.
(I didn't read a word of this thread for fear of spoilers. xD)

Interesting to note that Slumdog bombed at the box office in India...

I thought it was wonderful, and I'm a pretty picky movie-goer. I just really loved how different it was from any other film I'd ever seen. I found it extremely moving, through provoking and absorbing. I wasn't able to stop thinking about it for days. The cinematography and soundtrack were great as well. I hope it wins best picture.

My Fiancee wanted to see this and I went after he saw what I wanted Friday The 13th and Hes Just Not That Into You...both of them were great imo...well this one was okay...I had a headache though after a very long workday when I saw it so I may have to watch it again on dvd when it comes out.

I really enjoyed it. I've heard a fair bit about it romanticising poverty but, although it took a humourous approach and had a happy ending, I don't think it did so. I think it would have opened many people's minds about the human rights abuses that occur and the kind of hardship and effects it has on individuals and communities.

I still think the dancing at the end was a deliberate slap in the face of bollwyood movie producers in an effort to get them to start making challenging films as opposed to the same old tired formulas they've been producing for years.

Such a terribly violent film. From the beginning to the end, I was horror-struck.
Thank god that it ended with a fairy-tale happy-ever-after. Took away the rawness of the rest.
I think this is an extremely worthwhile film, and definitely it deserves its fame and fortune.
(Oh, and I thought the dancing at the end was a BRILLIANT touch!!!)

I really liked it too, I've never been to India but am interested in cultural issues worldwide and many documentaries I've seen include similar levels of corruption and violence. I thought it was good that this was included. As for the dance scene, while not entirely a slap in the face to Bollywood films, I think it was just to show "look, we've shown you a different side of India, now here's a slice of the cinema they are known for". I mean it was kind of weirdly out of place, but I could maybe see the characters feeling like that.Plus I like my fairy tales w/ salt in them.
Good movie, but will male characters ever be able to love merely semi-beautiful women? :|
I agree. I mean there are plenty of female viewers *cough* me *cough* who are more than willing to dote over Dev Patel's adorably average self. :smitten:
They really should've picked someone who wasn't a model. However I know a prob they were running into w/ casting was that a lot of the Bollywood actors are very buff, the opposite of the kind of actor they wanted: that was why they wound up casting Londoner Dev. I imagine the actresses are probably the same way but they didn't find that as much of a prob. I mean lets face it, Bollywood is all manly brooding men and impossibly gorgeous women.

My friends and I went to see it after it won so many awards at the Oscars. We went expecting to hate it just in spite, lol. However, as soon as it ended, we were like, wow. We loved it. It had a realistic feel, a bit of everything, and i loved the music. =D I could have done w/o some of the violence...
